CROWN POINT | An investigation continues into a two-vehicle crash Saturday in Crown Point that left one of the drivers dead and the other seriously injured.

Crown Point police are asking witnesses to the crash to contact Cpl. Dominic Valsi at (219) 663-2131, ext. 274.

An investigative team looking into the crash determined a Ford pickup truck traveling south on Broadway at about 4:15 p.m. crossed the center line into northbound traffic just north of 113th Avenue, Police Chief Pete Land said.

The pickup collided head-on with a car being driven north, Land said.

The driver of the pickup truck, Michael W. Gartner, 32, of Crown Point, was taken to the Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus, Merrillville, where he died just after 10 p.m. Saturday of blunt force trauma suffered in the crash, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

Gartner had to be extricated from the vehicle, police said. He was alone in the truck.

Police identified the driver of the northbound car Monday as Donald Kirk, 48, of Crown Point.

Kirk initially was taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital, Crown Point, and then airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center, Oak Lawn, Ill., with serious injuries, police said.

Two passengers in Kirk's car, both 15 years old and relatives of Kirk's, also sustained serious injuries, police said. One of the passengers was taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital and the other was taken to the Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus, police said.

The crash scene was "one of complete devastation," Land said. Crown Point police, fire and EMS departments were aided by emergency personnel from Schererville and Lakes of the Four Seasons.

"Although there were a number of motorists who stopped, we are still looking for citizens who witnessed the actual crash," Land said.

"Our thoughts go out to the families involved," Land said.
