CROWN POINT | Police said a Wheatfield man took a ring off a deceased person's hand during a funeral service and sold it for $300.

Andrew Trumpus, 33, has been charged with conversion in connection with the alleged theft, Crown Point police said in a prepared statement.

Relatives thought it odd when Trumpus grew "overly emotional" and leaned over and touched the hands of the deceased family member, considering the two had not been very close, police said.

Funeral home staff notified the family after the service that a diamond ring was missing from the deceased person's hand.

Police said Trumpus admitted to his mother he'd taken the ring valued at $6,600 and sold it to a jewelry store.

His mother bought the ring back and returned it to the family, police said.

An arrest warrant for Trumpus has been issued, police said.
