Seven members of the 20th Indiana Infantry re-enactment group have been helping recreate the bloodiest battle fought on American soil at the site where it happened.

The group, based on an actual volunteer Civil War fighting unit from Lake County, joined thousands of other re-enactors Wednesday at the Gettysburg National Military Park for the 150th anniversary of the bloodiest battle of America's bloodiest war.

Since Wednesday, the group has camped in period-style tents and re-enacted several battles per day in the Pennsylvania Wheatfield, near where the actual fighting occurred in 1863. The events were scheduled to continue through the weekend.

The actual 20th Indiana Infantry Company B was a Civil War fighting unit made up of men largely from Crown Point, Lowell and Merrillville. The regiment's commander — Col. John Wheeler, of Crown Point — died on the second day of the three-day battle.
