Respiratory therapists Sarah Volk and Emily Cain, co-workers at The Community Hospital in Munster, do whatever they can to raise awareness about lung disease.

Earlier this month that meant stepping over the edge of the 27-story theWit Hotel in Chicago and rappelling to the ground as part of the Skyline Plunge!

The annual fundraiser benefits Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago programs and research.

"It was pretty scary," Volk said of her second time participating in the event. "But it was fun, and it was worth it."

Volk and Cain, both of Crown Point, partnered in their 15-minute descent of the building, mountaineer style, after just a few lessons.

"I loved it," Cain said.

Volk, a 21-year veteran respiratory therapist whose husband was diagnosed six years ago with a rare form of emphysema, said information supplied by the Respiratory Health Association is invaluable to her and her patients.

"I use it all the time at work," said Volk, who also runs several support groups for family and friends of those affected by lung disease.

Cain, a respiratory therapist for nearly five years, said she does all she can to volunteer and get involved in awareness activities. "I'd love for the (Respiratory Health Association) to broaden its scope to Northwest Indiana," Cain said.

Volk said the duo's participation in the Plunge raised awareness in Community Hospital.

"Both Emily and I got the support of many of the doctors," Volk said.
