CROWN POINT | Lake County Surveyor George Van Til said Wednesday a buried storm water culvert isn't causing a sinkhole in downtown Schererville.
Van Til told members of the Lake County Drainage Board a video examination of the Spring Street Ditch between Joliet Street and Wilhelm Street show there were no obstructions or leaks that caused ground above the buried culvert to sink. He said another underground structure may be to blame for the problem.
Van Til said the county will no longer need to spend nearly a quarter of a million dollars replacing the culvert.
However, he said the line does need about $30,000 in minor repairs. The drainage board approved the work.
The drainage board heard of a proposal to connect the homes of 200 residents of the Hermits Lake and Hawthorn Hills subdivisions to this city's sewer system.
Dan Gardner, the clean water coordinator for the county surveyor's office, said Wednesday he will appear March 27 before the Crown Point Board of Public Works to outline the early stages of an effort by Van Til, County Commissioner Gerry Scheub, D-Crown Point, and Crown Point Mayor David Uran to approach U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, for the money needed for the project.
