CROWN POINT | National Police Memorial Week, which begins May 12, will hold special meaning for the Pipes and Drums of the Lake County Sheriff this year.
The name of late Lake County Corrections Officer Britney Muex, who was killed March 6, 2012 when she was struck by a hit and run driver as she jogged with fellow officers, was recently engraved on the Law Enforcement Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. The wall honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The names of those who died in 2012 were added for this year’s commemorative activities.
The band is one of three chosen to play at the Candlelight Vigil May 13 and one of four bands chosen to play May 15 on the Capitol steps. They will also perform May 14 as part of the memorial service.
To help defray travel costs, the Pipes and Drums are having their 11th annual Men in Kilts fundraiser from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday May 4 at the Lake County Fairgrounds 4-H building.
Tickets are $10 and there will be food, drink, prizes and live entertainment.
