CROWN POINT | National Police Memorial Week, which begins May 12, will hold special meaning for the Pipes and Drums of the Lake County Sheriff's Department this year.

The name of Lake County Corrections Officer Britney Muex, who was killed March 6, 2012, when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver as she jogged with fellow officers, was recently engraved on the Law Enforcement Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

The wall honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The band is one of three chosen to play at the Candlelight Vigil May 13 and one of four bands chosen to play May 15 on the Capitol steps. They also will perform May 14 as part of the memorial service.

To help defray travel costs, the Pipes and Drums units holds its 11th annual Men in Kilts fundraiser from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Lake County Fairgrounds 4-H building.

Tickets are $10 and there will be food, drink, prizes and live entertainment.
