CROWN POINT | The Northwest Indiana Catholic Youth Organization held its diocesan spelling bee on May 14, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point.
The following were winners in the three divisions: third through fourth grade, Fred Strezo from St. Mary School in Griffith; fifth through sixth grade, Leo Lopez from Nativity of Our Savior School; seventh through eighth grade, Megan Ritter from host school St. Mary in Crown Point.
Nine schools participated in this year’s competition; Aquinas, Nativity of Our Savior, Our Lady of Grace, St. John the Baptist, St. John Bosco, St. Mary in Crown Point, St. Mary in Griffith, St. Paul, and St. Thomas More.
The CYO restored the spelling bee after a seven year hiatus.
“We’re happy to have the CYO spelling bee back,” CYO Executive Director, Paul Wengel said.
Current program coordinator Stephanie Kustka organized this year’s event along with a group of St. Mary’s staff members.
