Class teaches bully prevention

CROWN POINT | 360 Family Martial Arts presents an after-school karate program that teaches bully prevention, helps to develop character, confidence, and focus and adds a little martial arts. No fee for the four-week session. The first session is at 4 p.m. at the Crown Point Community Library, 122 N. Main St.


Students let Freedom sing

GARY | The students at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy Elementary School, 975 W. Sixth Ave., Gary, present their annual music program, Freedom, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Career center open house

HAMMOND | The Area Career Center of Hammond holds its Career Night/Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. at the center, 5727 Sohl Ave. It's for all sophomores and juniors and their parents. Students who currently attend Clark, Gavit, Hammond and Morton high schools in Hammond or Calumet, Edison, Griffith, Highland, Lake Central, Munster and Whiting high schools are invited. Preschool options showcased

HOBART | The annual Showcase of Preschools at the Early Learning Center at George Early School, 400 N. Wilson St., provides parents an opportunity to meet preschool and day care providers and obtain information and answers about school philosophy, curriculum, tuition and enrollment procedures. No registration required. It's from 5 to 7 p.m. Park in front of the school and enter through Door 1.


Ancient Future exhibit opens

HAMMOND | The Ancient Future, an exhibit by Chicago artist Charles Deeda DeShields, has its opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hammond Arts Center, 5832 Hohman Ave., Hammond. It includes live music and refreshments.


Sweets, Treats tour offered

WHITING | The Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce businesses will serve samples of sweets and treats during a Second Saturday event, Sweets and Treats tour. Posts challenge chili cooks

WHITING | Whiting American Legion Post 80 and Walter Kleiber VFW Post 2724 host a chili cook-off from 2 to 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 80, 2003 Indianapolis Blvd., Whiting. All chili entries must be in by 1 p.m.; cost is $5 per person to taste. Proceeds benefit rehabilitation and the Indiana Veterans Home.

20 booths at women's fair

HOBART | The Hobart Elks Lodge hosts a Ladies Exhale party from 4 to 8 p.m. at the lodge, 3580 W. 61st Ave. It features 20 vendors especially selected for women with concessions, a cash bar, shopping, manicures, massage, raffle, 50/50 and vendor demonstrations. Couples paint on canvas

CROWN POINT | It's Couples, Canvas & Cabernet from 6 to 9 p.m. at South Shore Arts, 123 N. Main St., Crown Point. Attend Hair of the Dog gala

MERRILLVILLE | The Humane Society Calumet Area hosts its annual gala, Hair of the Dog, from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, Merrillville. Sample an international menu featuring food from Italy, India and the Mediterranean while sipping one of more than 20 wines or complimentary beer provided by Three Floyds Brewing. Auction helps fire victims

HAMMOND | Quarters 4 a Cause hosts an auction to benefit a young family who lost their home and three young children in a fire Jan. 5. Doors open at noon at the Hammond FOP Lodge, 7527 Kennedy Ave., Hammond. Auction starts at 1 p.m. There will be food and bake sale. Cost is $5.
