CROWN POINT | The battle for control of the Lake County Democratic Party is set.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., who is stepping down as county chairman, said Wednesday the deadline for candidates to file has closed, and three candidates will face-off June 28.

Lake County Clerk Mike Brown, Sheriff John Buncich and County Commissioner Mike Repay will compete for the most votes of a caucus of hundreds of Democratic precinct committeemen.

The caucus will begin 10 a.m. at the Lake County Government Complex auditorium.

McDermott, who has served five years as party boss, announced last month he would leave the post to concentrate on his mayoral duties and a potential future campaign for state office.
