VALPARAISO | Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority of Valparaiso is continuing to help recycle books as well as raise funds with its fifth annual Used Book Sale.
The event is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday Oct. 18 and Friday Oct. 19 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday Oct. 20 at the National Guard Armory, 1502 Linwood Ave.
From April to September, the organization collects books every month at Home Mountain Printing, 3602 Enterprise Ave.
“They store them there and bring them here by the truckload for the sale. The local National Honor Society sends 100 students to help us unload the trucks,” said Cathy Tursman of Tri Kappa. “It takes three days to get everything organized. The books are organized by authors and subjects.”
Tri Kappa took over the annual sale five years ago from AAUW.
“The university women used to do it but they were getting overwhelmed as they have a small membership. We are under 100 but we have a lot of people and we thought we could do it, plus we have a variety of ages from young to hold,” Tursman said.
The book sale builds on Tri Kappa’s giving tradition.
“All of the money we make on this goes to scholarships for the high school kids going into college,” she said. “Tri Kappa is totally philanthropic. We also have the Taste of Valparaiso in the spring and that goes to all different groups in town. They send us what they need.
“All of our money goes straight back to the community. We do the best we can to try to help.”
In 2013, the organization will be collecting books at Home Mountain from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on April 20, May 18, June 22, July 20, Aug. 24 and Sept. 21.
