CROWN POINT | The University of Saint Francis Crown Point held a pinning ceremony Tuesday at Crown Point High School for graduates of its Associate of Science in Nursing degree.

Twenty-six graduates, the highest number since USF Crown Point began offering the degree, received their nurses’ pins, the symbol of their readiness to take board exams and enter the professional world of nursing.

“The nursing pinning ceremony has a long-standing history in the role of nursing education,” senior Elaine Brothers, interim dean said. “It gives us an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating students, as well as to introduce the students into the nursing profession. USF is honored to prepare nurses to serve the healthcare needs of northwest Indiana.”

The tradition of the nursing pin and the ceremonial pinning originated in the 1860’s at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas Hospital in London.

Having been recently awarded The Red Cross of St. George for her selfless service to the injured and dying in the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, chose to extend this honor to her most outstanding graduate nurses by presenting each of them with a medal for excellence. By 1916, the practice of pinning new nurses was common in schools throughout the United Kingdom and North America.
