CROWN POINT | University of Saint Francis Crown Point Medical Lab Technician Program director Julie Kucek and administrators visited Alverno Laboratories in Hammond and numerous other regional labs as part of Medical Laboratory Professionals Week April 22-26. The USF Crown Point group staffed MLT program information booths and talked with visitors about the program and the medical lab technician field.

The week launched in 1975 to focus upon experts in the field of laboratory testing. It provides those in the profession, now numbering around 300,000 in the United States, with a unique opportunity to increase public understanding of and appreciation for clinical laboratory personnel.

Since the development of this career group in the 1920s, clinical laboratory science professionals have played an increasing role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease. Today, they are members of healthcare teams.

As assurance of quality healthcare and professional accountability become more stringent, organizations representing practitioners of this science have a responsibility to inform the public about clinical laboratory competency through events like Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, according to the MLPW website.

“Medical laboratory technicians are vital members of medical teams working on the diagnosis and prevention of disease,” Kucek said. “The University of Saint Francis Crown Point is enthusiastic about this effort to educate the public on the roles and responsibilities of these professionals.”

The university is accepting applications for fall semester entry into its MLT Program. For information or to apply, visit sf.edu/CrownPoint or contact Kucek at jkucek@sf.edu.
