CROWN POINT | The University of Saint Francis is accepting enrollment for a new Associate of Science-Medical Laboratory Technician in January.
The Associate of Science-Medical Laboratory Technician provides another option for students interested in health sciences careers. Market studies have identified associate-level clinical laboratory science as a substantial growth area in the health sciences field and as a potent higher-education-to-career degree. The degree also provides students a basis for advancement to baccalaureate and graduate degrees.
Coursework balances the foundations of science with focused technical skills. It includes 16 hours of clinical rotations, which can be completed through an arrangement with Franciscan Alliance, Inc.
Students will fulfill the general education requirements through various courses in social and natural sciences, humanities, religious studies and math, with the majority of coursework focusing on science and laboratory competencies.
The clinical laboratory science/medical technology program has a long tenure at the bachelor degree level at the main University of Saint Francis campus in Fort Wayne, and the Crown Point associate degree draws from that expertise and academic tradition.
Full-time USF Crown Point staff members serve as academic advisors and mentors to medical laboratory technician majors, assisting them to design a program that helps them complete a degree or continue to a bachelor's degree. Full-time faculty will also serve as instructors in many of the program’s courses, giving students a rich interdisciplinary experience.
“We at USF Crown Point are excited about the opportunity this new program offers students in northwest Indiana,” Interim Dean Sister Elaine Brothers said. “This program was created as a response to a local need for additional MLTs to serve the needs of the local healthcare facilities. The program was developed in cooperation with PCL Alverno. We plan to continue to respond to other healthcare needs in the region by providing academic programs to prepare a qualified workforce.”
Students can apply through the Office of Admissions by calling (877) 803-8879, emailing to cpadm@sf.edu, or apply online at sf.edu/crownpoint.
The University of Saint Francis Crown Point is a regional campus of the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind., a private Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition.
