CROWN POINT | Relatives of a woman fatally stabbed last weekend said they have told police her attacker had a history of abusing her.
Brittany Peters, 26, died Saturday night of multiple stab wounds in what authorities label as a homicide arising from a domestic disturbance in a residential unit of the Heritage Court Apartments complex on Indiana Avenue, here.
A 32-year-old male, who police only identified as a boyfriend of Brittany Peters, also sustained stab wounds in the disturbance and underwent emergency surgery at Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Crown Point.
Police have said they don't believe any third party was involved in the assault, which is under investigation by Crown Point police, the coroner's office and the county police crime lab staff. No charges had been filed in the matter last weekend.
Jeff Peters, an uncle of the deceased, and Latina Perry, a cousin, said Monday their family have told police they believe the male, who they identify as Charles Henry, had a history of abusing Brittany Peters.
They said the victim, a Chicago native, had a 13-year relationship with Henry and together they had a daughter, 7-year-old Na-Miyah. They said Na-Miyah and another young daughter of Brittany Peters are in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Jeff Peters said he is convinced Brittany Peters didn't stab Henry and questions whether Henry's wounds only give the appearance Henry stabbed her in self defense.
Jeff Peters and Latina Perry said police were called to investigate allegations Henry was abusing Brittany Peters during an earlier period, when the two were living in Illinois.
The relatives said Brittany Peters had only been living in Crown Point less than six months and that Henry wasn't living with the victim at the time.
