Crown Point is the place to be today if you want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The fun begins at noon with the kickoff of the St. Baldrick’s Day fundraiser in the small bay at the Crown Point Fire Station 126 N. East St. Head shaving will continue until 4 p.m., with proceeds raised by "shavees" going to help fight childhood cancers.

If you already have your St. Patrick’s Day dinner tickets, enjoy eating corn beef and cabbage from 1 to 6 p.m. Then, walk over to the downtown square and enjoy the entertainment, vendors and light parade, which begins at dusk (about 6:45 p.m.).

The parade will leave from Solon Robinson Elementary School, travel west on Wells Street to Main Street and north to the downtown square.

Crown Point Community Library will be closed today because of the celebration. Also, some streets in the downtown area and along the parade route will be closed for at least a portion of the day.

Healthy Kids Day

Children and their parents can enjoy Healthy Kids Day from 1 to 4 p.m. March 24 at the Southlake YMCA, 1450 S. Court St., Crown Point. This free event is for all children in kindergarten through grade 5. The fun includes basketball, soccer, dancing, swimming, learning about gardening and a story with the greyhounds.

Chocolate eggs available

Crown Point's Tri Kappa chapter has its wonderful chocolate Easter Eggs on sale. The 4 oz. eggs are $4 each with a variety of fillings available, krunch, chocolate, peanut butter, maple nut, caramel, raspberry and coconut cream.

Profits help fund Tri Kappa’s high school scholarships.

Poison center available

This coming week is Poisoning Emergency Awareness Week. The Indiana Poison Center is a source of free information and a treatment resource. They have nurses and pharmacists specially trained in toxicology on call 24 hours a day/365 days a year.

If you suspect a child, pet or loved one has accidentally swallowed poison, do not wait for symptoms to appear, call the center at (800) 222-1222. You will be advised on what to do. The center also offers suggestions and tips how to keep children and pets safe from toxins in your home.
