CROWN POINT | Police said a domestic dispute Saturday night escalated into a knife fight that left a woman dead and her boyfriend severely injured.
The Lake County coroner's office identified her as Brittany Peters, 26.
Police said the survivor, a 32-year-old male, won't be publicly identified until both families have been notified.
Crown Point Police Chief Pete Land said police received a 911 call at 6:46 p.m. from a relative of one of the victims who told officers the two had been stabbed during a domestic dispute at their home in the Heritage Court Apartments complex, two blocks south of Indiana Avenue and Main Street.
Land said an initial investigation indicates the victims, who are believed to be boyfriend and girlfriend, began arguing, both armed themselves with knives and both suffered several stab wounds during their struggle.
Crown Point city emergency workers transported the two to St. Anthony Medical Center, where Peters was pronounced dead at 7:34 p.m. The man has undergone surgery for his wounds.
Land said the assault is under investigation by his department, the coroner's office and the Lake County Sheriff's Department's crime lab.
The coroner's office has tentatively labeled her death a homicide.
Land stated in a news release, "Our investigation at this point indicates that the disturbance was between only the male and female victims. Based on our initial findings, we are confident that no other subjects were involved nor are there any persons at large.
"It appears as if it was a domestic argument that quickly escalated to the point where one person is now dead and the other is requiring emergency surgery," Land said.
