Twenty Purdue University Calumet distinguished alumni will be honored and invited to share their expertise and perspectives during Alumni Leaders Day festivities on campus Nov. 6. VETERAN BENEFITS | Valparaiso
The deadline is today to RSVP for a free Veterans Aid and Attendance Seminar at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at Brookdale Sterling House, 2601 Valparaiso St. Wartime veterans or the surviving spouse of a veteran may be entitled to a monthly benefit amount ranging from $1,056-$1,949 from the Veterans Administration. The Veterans Service office of Porter County will be providing the presenters, James Lynch, Louise Stanko and James Atkinson, all accredited representatives by the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Marine Corps League.

VETERANS DINNER | Highland
A World War II Veterans Plaque Rededication and Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser will be held from 3:30 to 7 p.m.
Nov. 7, at Elks Lodge 981, 3120 45th St. The all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner includes salad, bread, dessert and coffee. Tickets are $7 for ages 13 and older and $4 for ages 6 to 12; younger children eat free. Elks Lodge 981 was established more than 100 years ago in East Chicago and moved 17 years ago. The plaque was originally dedicated at the former East Chicago lodge hall in honor of WWII veterans. Removed due to the move, it was lost and was recently recovered, restored and is being rededicated in honor of those who have served to protect freedom.

HARVEST BAZAAR | Gary
A Harvest Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Roosevelt Park Pavilion, 21st and Harrison Street. New and used items, food, arts and crafts. Vendors can rent space for $15, or $25 for food booths.

A double-elimination Bean Bag Tournament will be held Nov. 7 at American Legion Allied Post 369, 1401 W. Chicago Ave. Registration is from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and contest starts at 6. BLOOD DRIVE | Whiting
Hours have changed to 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for American Red Cross blood drive scheduled Nov. 7 at Elks Lodge at 1521 119th St. This blood drive is dedicated in honor of veterans, wounded warriors and cancer patients.

HEALTH FAIR | Munster
Free cardiovascular screenings and more will be offered during a Health Fair scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 7 at Franciscan Physicians Hospital, 701 Superior Ave. Screenings will take place near the pre-op and catheterization labs and will include blood pressure, lipid profile, body mass index, glucose, electrocardiogram, abdominal aortic aneurysm, flash echo and carotid quick screening. Paul Jones, MD, interventional cardiologist, and Chicago Heart and Vascular Consultants, will be on hand to discuss findings with visitors. Hilton Hudson, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon, will provide a lecture and speak about cardiovascular disease. Visitors are asked to register at the Welcome Center to receive paperwork and verify screening times. Educational lectures on heart disease, heart health, vascular disease, aortic aneurysm, peripheral vascular disease and stroke awareness-management will be offered throughout the day in the hospital recovery area. Refreshments and giveaways will be available in the main lobby. Persons wishing a lipid profile, glucose or aortic aneurysm screening must fast a minimum of six hours before the test.

PUC HOMECOMING | Hammond
Purdue University Calumet alumni are invited to celebrate homecoming Nov. 7 with an alumni reception, campus tours and a basketball double-header. A free reception for all alumni and their families will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Calumet Conference Center at the far south end of campus, accessible south of 173rd Street. Hors d'oeuvres and an open bar will be provided. Additionally, campus bus tours are scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Purdue Calumet's women's and men's basketball teams will be in action -the women's team hosting Spring Arbor (Mich.) University at 2 p.m., followed at 4 p.m. by the Purdue Calumet men's game vs. rival Indiana University Northwest. During half-time of the men's game, Purdue Calumet 1988 alumna Dori Downing will receive the Purdue Alumni Calumet Bob Hayes Athletic Alumni Award. Additionally, members of the Purdue Calumet Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2009-10 will be introduced: Bob Hayes (coach, athletic director, faculty member and statistician,1952-89), Ed Blackmon (men's basketball, 1981-83), Lee Ann DeYoung (women's basketball, 1984-88), Larry Liddle (men's basketball coach, 1981-2000) and Rod Weingart (soccer & baseball, 1969-72). VETERANS SERVICE | Leroy
Presented by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee and hosted by the Lake County Parks Department, a Veteran's Recognition Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Stoney Run County Park, 142nd & Union Street. Speakers include Andrew Dykstra, winner of the American Legion National Oratory Award, and Fred Langley from Kouts American Legion Post 301. Coordinating the service will be Marty Dzieglowicz, past First District commander and current Northern vice commander of the American Legion. A gun salute will be given by members of American Legion Post 261 in Cedar Lake, who have been participating in the service since 1974.

HEALTH SCREENINGS | Merrillville
Methodist Hospitals is offering free health screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body fat analysis, bone density, oximetry and PSA screening from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 7 at the Hellenic Cultural Center, 8000 Madison St. In addition to the free screenings, many of the hospital services will be represented by health care professionals with free literature and giveaways. Participants will have the opportunity to speak to a physician about their screening results or health questions. Advance Financial Federal Credit Union has scheduled a combination free Shred Day/Food Drive on from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 7 at the main branch, 31 W. U.S. 30. The event aims at helping people protect themselves from identity thieves while getting into the holiday spirit by donating canned food items to the credit union's Annual Food Drive For The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, continuing through Nov. 14. Provided by SECURE Eco-Shred, the shredding is free and open to all area residents. Bring up to two banker's-size boxes of unwanted personal documents for shredding.

T-SHIRT SALES | Highland
Highland Select Centennial Committee is selling T-shirts commemorating the town's 2010 centennial. The shirts, all adult sizes, include the official centennial logo with an orange and fuchsia tulip. Colors available are black (with white printing), yellow, pistachio and serene green. Cost is $10 each. T-shirts are available at the Town Hall, 3333 Ridge Road.
