EASTER DINNER | Munster

A Polish Swieconka and Polish Roman Catholic Union District 9 reunion is scheduled for April 11 at the Carmelite Fathers banquet hall, 1628 Ridge Road. Mass is at noon, lunch begins at 1:30 p.m. Donation is $25, children up to 7 years old are free of charge and those 8 to 16 pay $10. Reservation deadline is March 25. The reunion for PRCUA District 9 members is at 3 p.m. and reunion only costs $10 at the door. The Health & Healing Ministry is presenting a program at 10 a.m. Feb. 27 in Room 209 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Ave., entitled Beginning Difficult Conversations - Talking Before the Crisis. Presenters are Dr. Charles Helms, Dr. M. Teolis and two registered nurses from St. Margaret Mercy Hospital. continental breakfast will be served. CHARITY EVENT | Hammond

A concert Feb. 27 at the Hammond Civic Center, 5825 Sohl Ave., will benefit The Center for Homeless Veterans. Recording artists The Bacon Brothers Band, Frank Stallone and Joe Cantafio are some of the entertainers scheduled to perform. Doors open at 6 p.m. and show starts at 7. Donation is $37 and tickets are available at the Civic Center and at the door.

Annual Lithuanian Independence Day celebration hosted by Lithuanian American Council of Lake County, Lithuanian American Community Inc., East Chicago chapter, and Knights of Lithuania Council 82 of Gary, will be held Feb. 28 at American Legion Post 430, 7430 Broadway. BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM | East Chicago

The Concerned Calumet Citizens Committee is hosting a citywide black history program at 4 p.m. Feb. 28 at St. John A.M.E. Church, 4730 McCook Ave. The theme is "honoring the past and inspiring the future," with gospel recording artist C. Westly Tucker, various choirs, praise dancers and dramatic readings. There will also be a book signing with Latonya S. Hicks, author of "Life Through Brown Eyes." Ethnic dishes will be served.

The Whiting Parks Department will be taking a trip to the flower show at Navy Pier on March 13. Fee of $25 will cover transportation and entrance. An opening reception for a student art exhibit by senior visual art students of the Wirt/Emerson School of Visual and Performing Arts is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. March 2 at the Barbara Leek Wesson Art Gallery, located in the DuBois Branch of the Gary Public Library, 1835 Broadway. The exhibit is open from March 2 through April 10. The Wesson Art Gallery is open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

RECRUITING WALKERS | Crown Point

Alzheimer's & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, affiliated with Alzheimer's Foundation of America, is hold a breakfast meeting, "Let's Talk About the Walk," at 9 a.m. March 2, hosted by Franciscan Communities at 203 Franciscan Drive. Call to reserve a space for a workshop, Preparing For a Job Fair, to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 2 in Room 406 at Calumet College of St. Joseph, 2400 New York Ave. Calumet College of St. Joseph will host its annual spring 2010 career fair from 3 to 6 p.m. March 18 at the main campus, second floor. The workshop is to help job-seekers effectively prepare for the job fair. Call to reserve a space in the workshop. Students, alumni and the public are invited to attend; admission is free. Parking is available in the rear of the building. St. John Bosco Youth Group offers an all-you-can-eat soup and salad supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays during Lent beginning March 3 and continuing through March at the parish hall, 7111 Columbia Ave. Menu consists of soup, salad, bread and butter, crackers, dessert and beverage. At least three homemade soups will be offered, one will be a nonmeat soup. Price includes all soups and is $7 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Carry-outs available for $5, which includes one bowl of soup, bread and butter, salad and dessert. A Lenten Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. each Wednesday during Lent.

Dr. David Casarett, a physician who has cared for hospice patients for 10 years, will discuss his latest book, "Last Acts," at a free public lecture from 2 to 4 p.m. March 9 at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. This year's topic is "Ten Best Practices in Employee Care" and speaker Dr.

Charles Crowell of the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame will focus on keeping talent as well as motivating and nurturing employees to become high performers. After a one-hour talk, the speaker will entertain questions. Admission is free and open to all. RSVP.

Dr. Kumar Venkat will speak on how a colonoscopy for the early detection of colon cancer can save your life in a program at 5:30 p.m. March 3 in the Conference Room at Methodist Hospitals, Southlake Campus' Center for Advanced Clinical Studies, 200 E. 89th Ave. Individual colorectal cancer risk assessments will be available from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Colorectal cancer affects approximately 150,000 Americans each year, and is the nation's second leading cancer killer. However, it's 90 percent preventable and 90 percent treatable if detected early.

LENTEN SERIES | Highland

Mid-week Lenten Worship Series, "Word of Life from the Cross," based on the Lord’s seven last words from the cross, continues at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 24 through March 24, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 9009 Kennedy Ave., followed by a coffee and fellowship hour. The services will be conducted by pastors, the Rev. Arthur Burkman and Rev. Eric Kleinschmidt, the Rev. Ron Saatkamp of Concordia Lutheran Church of Hammond, and the Rev. Karl Davies of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hammond, on a rotating basis. Visitors are welcome.
