Scholarship opportunities in the region

Following are opportunities to apply for scholarships from various organizations in the Calumet Region.

Jan. 27

Scholarship Opportunities | Hammond

Wendy's Restaurant, 1844 165th St, will join the National College Funding Services on Jan. 27 to raise college scholarship funds specifically for the Northwest Indiana schools: Hammond High School, Clark High School, Morton High School, Gavit High School, Highland High School, Griffith High School, Munster High School and Whiting High School. Juniors and seniors from these schools attending Wendy's on this day will receive a $500 college scholarship application at the restaurant. The application will be entered into a drawing and will be applied towards the fall college semester. Each high school is eligible for two $500 college scholarship drawings.

Jan. 29

State scholarship opportunities | Lowell, Cedar Lake or Hebron

The state organization of Tri Kappa sorority will award a variety of scholarships to college students throughout the state in the spring. The Lowell Zeta Chi Chapter is currently seeking applicants to sponsor for a $1,000 academic scholarship given from each of the 12 provinces in Indiana. Any full-time college student currently enrolled in a baccalaureate or graduate program who has completed at least one academic year may apply. Criteria used by a Tri Kappa selection committee are high academic achievement, strong goals, extracurricular activities, work experience and volunteer service. Also available from the state organization are two, $1,000 fine arts scholarships awarded to students majoring in art, music, dance or drama. The students must be enrolled in an accredited degree program and must focus on either performing or teaching in their area of study. Two Key Scholarships are available to students who have no previous degree beyond high school and have had a lapse in their education for at least five years. Any student enrolled in an accredited school offering an associate or baccalaureate degree, who has completed at least one semester, may apply. The $1,000 Twaanette Nutter Fleming Music Award stipulates the applicant must be enrolled in a fully accredited course of study leading to a degree to teach music in a private, public, or parochial school, having completed at least one academic year. Applications for all of these scholarships are available at the Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave. Applicants must have a home address in Lowell, Cedar Lake or Hebron. Completed applications are due by Jan. 29.

Jan. 31

Apply for Tri Kappa scholarship | Gary, Merrillville, Crown Point

Applications for the 2011 scholarship awarded by the Beta Rho chapter of Tri Kappa sorority are available. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, resident of Indiana, sophomore in college in good academic standing, and must have attended high school in Gary, Merrillville or Crown Point, including Andrean. Applications are due by Jan. 31.

Feb. 15

Scholarship Opportunity | Crown Point

Lake County Master Gardeners will continue its scholarship program for the 2011-12 academic year. Scholarships will be awarded to college and university students who are residents of Lake County majoring in horticulture, landscape architecture, forestry, botany, plant pathology and entomology. Other majors that benefit consumer gardening may be considered if the applicant provides a one paragraph description of how they will use their major to promote the objectives of the Master Gardeners. The application deadline is Feb. 15. Application forms are available from university departmental offices, by calling the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service's Lake County Office or online.

March 1

Scholarship opportunities | Munster

The Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship Program is offering four-year undergraduate tuition scholarships up to $3,000 per semester to seniors from high schools in Lake and Newton counties who will be attending either Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana University Northwest, Purdue University West Lafayette, Purdue University Calumet, IUPUI, or Ball State University. Applicants must possess a minimum combined SAT score of 1650, a GPA of 3.25 or better, and be admitted unconditionally to one of the above universities. In addition to academic excellence, applicants must demonstrate school and community involvement and a desire to return to Northwest Indiana after university graduation. All seniors from high schools in Lake and Newton counties who meet these qualifications are eligible to apply by March 1.

March 15

Apply to CPCF | Crown Point

Crown Point Community Foundation Inc. is accepting applications for its 2011 Scholarship Program. Applications are available at the Crown Point High School guidance department and other high schools in Lake and Porter counties, at the foundation office at 213 S. Court St. in Crown Point, and online at www.crownpointcommunityfoundation.org. A complete list of available scholarship awards can be obtained at the foundation website. Scholarship applications must be received by March 15. Last year, the foundation awarded more than $150,000 in 98 scholarships.

March 25

Zeta Chi offers scholarships | Lowell, Cedar Lake or Hebron

Lowell chapter Zeta Chi of Tri Kappa sorority encourages any local resident of Lowell, Cedar Lake, or Hebron currently enrolled in a trade program or course of study that will result in an associate or baccalaureate degree to apply for its annual scholarship. Applications for this $500 continuing education scholarship are available at the Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave. All completed applications are due by March 25. Also, Lowell High School seniors may apply for one of two annual scholarships offered by Zeta Chi. These applications are available in the guidance office at LHS and need to be returned by March 25. Recipients will be announced during the spring awards night at Lowell High School.

March 31

Rotary World Peace Fellowship | Northwest Indiana

Applications for the 2012-2014 Rotary World Peace Fellowships are now available from Rotary Clubs in Northern Indiana. The fellowships are for study at one of five Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution to obtain a two-year master's-level degree in international relations, peace studies, conflict resolution and related areas. Students are eligible to apply if they have completed a bachelor's and have at least three years of full-time paid or unpaid work experience in a related field. Applications are due March 31.

April 4

Scholarship opportunities | Dyer, St. John, Schererville, St. John Twp.

Zeta Psi chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority is offering scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 to graduating high school seniors who are planning to attend college or a vocational/training school. Candidates must be in the top 25 percent of their class academically and have volunteer/community service experience. Student's home address must be in Dyer, Schererville, St. John or St. John Township. The deadline to apply is April 4.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships | Northwest Indiana

Applications for the 2012-2013 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships are now available from Rotary Clubs in Northwest Indiana. The scholarships provide for study abroad in more than 60 countries where Rotary Clubs are located. Students are eligible to apply if they have completed at least two years of university or college coursework. Academic year Ambassadorial Scholarships are for one academic year abroad and provide for round-trip transportation, tuition and fees, room, board, some educational supplies and language training if necessary, up to a minimum award of $27,000 or its equivalent. Applications are due April 30.
