DYER | The town has formally agreed to co-fund a school resource officer position at Lake Central High School.
The Dyer Town Council approved town support of the officer pending the signing of an interlocal agreement.
The St. John Town Council already accepted a $125,000 federal Community Oriented Policing Services grant to pay the officer’s first 18 months of salary.
An officer will be assigned to the high school at the start of the 2013 school year. Schererville, Dyer, St. John and the Lake Central School Board will contribute additional funding under the interlocal agreement.
St. John Police Chief Fred Frego and Lake Central School Corp. Superintendent Larry Veracco will be involved in the selection process.
Among the officer's duties will be mentoring and counseling of students and working with Lake Central High School staff.
