DYER | The town’s art group has a name, a mission and a new project aimed at forming a community band, organizers said.
Marcella Gercken, a former Dyer music teacher who is also a member of the Kankakee Municipal Band, is spearheading that effort. Meanwhile, other members of Dyer Arts Visionaries, or DAVe, continue to brainstorm, thinking of ways to bring the arts to Dyer.
“We want to bring the arts to Dyer, not just the visual arts but the performing arts,” said Paul Benninghoff, a DAVe member and its spokesman.
The group is discussing art shows, finding funds for public sculptures, starting a community theater and sponsoring art classes.
DAVe is a relatively new group, having convened its first meeting in January.
Many communities have bands, Gercken said, and Dyer’s could “hopefully have concerts that people in Dyer and Tri-Town will enjoy.”
DAVe members particularly liked the idea of the band because it’s “all ages, working together, that’s what a community is,” Benninghoff said.
The community band will be strictly about fun, Gercken said. Members will be there “for pleasure and enjoyment,” she said.
Gercken recently made a pitch for the band at the Dyer Chamber of Commerce corn roast and continues to seek members. In the meantime, DAVe also welcomes new members.
