DYER | The town has been asked to provide a member to a new committee that will examine flagging Amtrak ridership.
Dyer has an Amtrak stop at 913 Sheffield Ave. It has been asked to send a delegate to a committee that will look at the issue of declining use of that station, Town Councilman Jeff Dekker said.
The Hoosier State line by Amtrak runs daily between Indianapolis and Chicago and stops at Dyer twice, once in the morning and once in early evening.
Even though Amtrak said last year it had to replace the current Dyer passenger shelter according to regulations, it also was considering canceling or reducing its stops in Dyer due to low ridership numbers.
The town developed a relationship with Amtrak some years ago when volunteers and employees rehabbed the shelter and site, part of an attempt to beautify the area. Hopes for a future full-fledged station at the site also was part of a plan that led to an overlay zoning ordinance for Sheffield Avenue.
