DYER | Dyer officials have set up a meeting with the owner of Longwood Golf Course to turn the property into a stormwater reservoir.
The process, however, would be long and costly, town officials said.
The reservoir would serve as a retention area for runoff from the Plum Creek watershed, which includes Dyer and other communities in Illinois and Northwest Indiana.
In the long run, such a reservoir would dramatically reduce the risk of floods in those communities, Dyer officials said.
Officials also hope that once converted from a golf course, the Longwood property in Crete could provide recreational opportunities that in turn would result in income from user fees for the village.
However, developing the property would cost millions of dollars in addition to property acquisition, officials said. No sale price for the golf course has been publicly mentioned by either party.
If and when the property were bought, Dyer stormwater officials likely would develop it over a period of years, with money from their operating fund, Town Administrator Rick Eberly said.
