DYER | The Town Council should have an interlocal agreement for a school resource officer in place soon.
The council must formally approve an agreement covering the employment of a school resource officer at Lake Central High School. Schererville, Dyer and St. John are teaming with the Lake Central School Board on funding for the position.
The first 18 months of funding has already been covered by a $125,000 federal Community Oriented Policing Services grant.
An officer will be assigned to the high school at the start of the 2013 school year. Among his or her duties will be mentoring and counseling of students and working with Lake Central High School staff.
The council reviewed the interlocal agreement at its April study session. The council holds its business meeting tonight.
