DYER | The Dog Park Committee has received a $1,500 donation from the Town Council, but not without some dissenting remarks from council President Jeff Dekker.
After praising the “energy, excitement and enthusiasm” of various volunteers working to make a dog park happen, Dekker said the committee is still thousands of dollars away from its goal.
The committee, which does its fundraising under the auspices of the nonprofit Dyer Community Foundation, wants to raise $35,000 during the next 12 to 15 months.
As of June, the committee had raised $2,225 aside from the Town Council donation.
Dekker said the council was taking action too early in the game.
“I think it’s a bad idea," he said.
He would have rather waited until the committee was closer to its goal, when the council’s contribution would have really made a difference.
The council approved the donation 4-1, with Dekker voting against the measure.
Afterward, committee President Julie Przybyla thanked the council for its donation.
The Dyer Park Board has set aside space for a new dog park in Central Park, and a committee of residents has started raising money to develop the space.
