DYER | A half-day paid holiday for employees is now part of the town’s personnel policy.
Half-day employee holidays have been given in the past, but Town Council approval makes it part of official personnel policy.
The half-day will occur in this month, with the council picking the date.
In past years, an employee holiday lunch has been held during business hours and those employees who wished to attend could. Those who did not would remain at work.
This year, attendance at the lunch is still optional, but all employees will receive a half-day paid holiday.
Council President Debbie Astor said that instead of a party being held during business hours, she would have preferred a town holiday gathering be held at night, so that board and commission members also could attend.
When she first served on the council, such parties were always held at night, she said.
Councilwoman Mary Tanis said she could not support the half-day holiday because those who work for the town of Dyer are public employees. She pointed out that as a teacher at Kahler Middle School she is a public employee herself.
This year’s holiday lunch will be Dec. 14, and as in past years it will be held at Texas Roadhouse in Dyer.
The town does not pay for employees’ lunches. Sponsorship and donations are solicited.
The lunch “has never been at taxpayers expense,” said town administrator Rick Eberly.
