DYER | A new Dyer Police Department policy governing social media use in the workplace may be on its way to being a townwide ordinance.
The Metropolitan Police Commission recently passed the policy, which sets out what officers and other department employees can and cannot do on the Internet while on the job.
The policy also covers use of non-town websites and what can be posted on such websites.
It is specific to police work and so would have to be fine-tuned if revamped for other departments, Town Attorney Bill Enslen said.
Enslen did not have a copy of the police policy with him. So the Town Council talked of it in general terms during last month's study session. The issue and its accompanying policy are expected to be on the agenda at November's council meeting.
Given the prevalence of social media a townwide ordinance “is something we should look at," Council President Debbie Astor said.
