DYER | A Dyer man was kidnapped from his garage and held by captors for several hours late Monday before being released in Hammond in what police are calling a possible planned robbery attempt.

At 10:17 p.m., a 31-year-old resident of a home in the 200 block of Buttercup Lane started to leave his residence when a man tried to force his way inside, Dyer police Cmdr. Joe Cinko said.

The resident shut the door and ran upstairs to call police.

Cinko said unbeknownst to the resident, his 37-year-old brother, who also lives at the home, pulled his car into the garage as his younger brother was calling the police. The elder brother was met in the garage by two men who forced him inside his car and drove him away, police said.

The man told police his captors covered his eyes and drove him in the car for several minutes before going into a building. Cinko said the suspects told the man they would "harm him if he didn't tell them where the drugs were."

The victim reportedly told the captors he was not aware of any drugs. Cinko said Dyer police have no record of having contact with the victim for any drug-related or other crimes.

The man said his captors screamed at him and continued to threaten him "for several hours" before switching cars and dropping him off somewhere in Hammond, telling him his own car was parked one block away.

Cinko said the man flagged down a Hammond police officer. He was not harmed in the incident.

Cinko said the suspects took some cash from the man, who had just arrived home from work in Lansing. The suspects may have followed the victim home from work, Cinko said, knowing he had the night deposit from the business.

"It may have been a planned robbery attempt," Cinko said.

The suspects remain at large. Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to contact them at (219) 865-1163.
