DYER | A man was arrested Sunday after an off-duty police officer recognized him as a bank robbery suspect, police said.

The off-duty Illinois officer was shopping at the Jewel-Osco at 805 Joliet St. when he saw a man he recognized as a suspect from a bank robbery last week, a Dyer police news release states.

The man, who was wearing a Chicago Transit Authority uniform, was pacing near the TCF Bank counter inside the grocery store about 9:55 a.m when the officer called Dyer police.

Once uniformed officers arrived, the man fled the store and allegedly pointed a revolver at a delivery driver as he exited the store through a delivery door, the release states.

Dyer officers chased the man across Calumet Avenue and into the Texas Roadhouse parking lot, where he was tasered and taken into custody.

The man's identity has not been released. Local officials contacted federal and Illinois agencies, police said.

The FBI issued a suspect description after a TCF Bank inside a Homewood Jewel-Osco was robbed at 9:16 a.m. Dec. 16.

They described the suspect as a man dressed in a Chicago Transit Authority uniform and released surveillance photos of his face.

An FBI spokeswoman with the Chicago office said Sunday night no charges had been filed in the Homewood robbery.
