DYER | With bids out for the railroad quiet zone project, work could begin as early as this month.

The Town Council expects to approve a contract for improvements to two rail crossings, Lake and Hart streets, at Thursday's meeting.

Work could be completed late next month.

In 2005, the Federal Railway Authority established rules that governed the blowing of train horns at crossings. At the same time, it established a process by which local governments can establish quiet zones, which remove the requirement for train operators to routinely sound their horn at all crossings.

Such designations also usually require significant improvements to crossings.

Canadian National Railway Co. is paying for all improvements associated with the quiet zones, including engineering. Improvements associated with a rail quiet zone include everything from a specially designed gate that blocks the track when a train is coming to median barriers that keep drivers from circumventing more conventional crossing gates.

The Federal Railroad Administration approved quiet zones at the Lake and Hart Street crossings last year.
