DYER | The Town Council will hold a meeting on the possibility of creating a fire territory at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Main Meeting Room at Town Hall.
Representatives from Schererville, St. John, Munster and the Lake Hills Fire Department in Schererville have been invited to join the discussion.
Fire protection territories are formed according to Indiana code. In order to establish one, public hearings must be held and the communities involved must pass identical ordinances.
The Brownsburg, Ind. Volunteer fire department formed the state’s first fire protection territory with the help of Indiana legislators in 1995. The territory provided more coverage for rural residents in neighboring townships, resulting in shorter response times.
