DYER | The Town Council may help decide the fate of the proposed Castlewood turn lane this month.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has the final say about whether it stays or goes, but has asked the council for its opinion. The council also took opinions from Castlewood residents, who firmly oppose its removal.
INDOT is the administering body for the Safe Routes to the School grant Dyer recently received. The grant money, $250,000, would build a sidewalk between Castlewood and the Walgreens store along U.S. 30.
Once built, the sidewalk would serve as a walking route for children in the Castlewood area who attend Kahler Middle School.
However, recent findings by W. Dennis Cobb of First Group Engineering show that the right of way along the Castlewood intersection right turn lane is too narrow to allow a sidewalk.
Either the turn lane could be eliminated or the town could buy right of way from Meyer’s Castle, which owns the property directly abutting the turn lane.
Either choice brings with it challenges, because Castlewood residents oppose eliminating the turn lane and buying right of way from Meyer’s Castle would mean dealing with the rules and regulations associated with a site listed on the National Register of Historic Properties.
