DYER | Construction of the third and final phase of the Berens-Monaldi flood control project is scheduled to begin this fall.
Construction of the remainder of the Berens-Monaldi floodwall and a pumping station should be completed in April, Town Administrator Rick Eberly said.
The flood control project in Berens-Monaldi subdivision was one of the Dyer Stormwater Board’s most high-profile projects, and decades in the making.
The floodwall, along the west side of Forest Park Drive in one of the town’s oldest neighborhoods, and future pumping station are designed hold back floodwater from Plum Creek, as well as overland drainage from the Cook County Forest Preserve in Illinois. The preserve is immediately west of the town line.
Phase One and Phase Two of the project involved building the floodwall. The Stormwater Board has used revenue bond money, which is paid for by stormwater fees, to finance most of this project.
For Phase Three, Dyer has obtained federal grant money, Eberly said.
The total amount of the grant is $522,000, meaning the Stormwater Board will have to use only about $173,000 of its own money to cover the balance of the project. The total project cost is $695,000.
Officials have set a target date of April 1 for completion of the project, Eberly said.
