ST. JOHN | Lake Central High School’s new principal will be a familiar face to many students.
Lake Central athletic director Robin Tobias will assume the principal’s duties effective July 1. His appointment was approved Monday by the Lake Central board of school trustees.
Tobias, who has been athletic director for two years, replaces Robert McDermott, who resigned to join the Crown Point Community School Corp. Ken Miller, principal of the Lake Central Freshman Center, is retiring after 29 years with the Lake Central School Corp. High school Assistant Principal Sean Begley will now lead the Freshman Center. *
The new high school principal also knows the school system well, having graduated from Lake Central in 1994.
Tobias earned his bachelor’s degree from Wabash College and his master's in administration from Indiana State University.
He has served as swim coach, English teacher, dean, athletic director and assistant principal in the Lake Central, Munster and Plymouth, Ind., school districts.
“It is a pleasure to recommend Tobias for the position of high school principal,” Assistant Superintendent Al Gandolfi said in presenting Tobias’ credentials and recommendation to the School Board.
“Tobias has distinguished himself in all of his former positions and is well prepared to take on the challenge of providing L.C. students with ever-improving academic and extracurricular programs,” Gandolfi said.
During the meeting, Tobias credited his own education and experiences as a student at Lake Central as the foundation of his dedication to public education.
“This is home to me,” he said. “It’s such an honor to be able to give back to L.C. in any way I can. I’m very excited to continue the good work with the outstanding faculty and staff of Lake Central High School.”
In the next three years, reconstruction of Lake Central High School and Freshman Center will be part of the $160 million construction project for the school corporation. Voters approved a referendum in November to expand the high school and build a new Protsman Elementary School in Dyer.
The new 1 million-square-foot facility will include a three-story academic wing and a two-story technical wing. Construction is slated to begin this summer.

PRINCIPAL MISIDENTIFIED: A story in some Wednesday editions about the new principal of Lake Central High School misidentified the new principal of the Freshman Center. Robin Tobias is replacing Robert McDermott as the high school principal. McDermott resigned to join the Crown Point Community School Corp. Shawn Begley, who has served as assistant principal at the high school, will be the Freshman Center principal. The Times regrets the error.
