ST. JOHN | The three newly elected members of the Lake Central School Board were sworn in Monday by Judge Thomas Stefaniak.
Janice Malchow is the newest member of the board. She replaces Valentine Lozanowski, who served a four-year term.
Don Basco and John DeVries were re-elected.
Rounding out the Lake Central School Board are George Baranowski and Howard Marshall.
The board elected Baranowski as president for 2013. Basco will serve as vice president, and DeVries is secretary.
As part of the organizational agenda, the board also established compensation for board members at $2,000 per year. Cheryl Zic, of the Munster-based law firm Singleton, Crist, Austgen & Sears, was selected as school corporation attorney.
Attorney James Shanahan, of Chicago, will continue as bond counsel.
Superintendent Larry Veracco told the board he has submitted a letter committing the school corporation to help fund the student resource officer for Lake Central High School. In December, the St. John Town Council authorized acceptance of a federal Community Oriented Police Services grant to help fund the salary of a St. John police officer at the high school.
In addition to Lake Central School Corp. and St. John, Dyer and Schererville are part of an interlocal agreement being prepared by St. John town attorney David Austgen.
Veracco said the school officer is “a tremendous opportunity for more security at our school.”
The mild winter weather has helped construction at Lake Central High School in St. John and Protsman Elementary School in Dyer, said Bill Ledyard, director of facilities.
“Things are going well,” Ledyard said.
The board awarded bids for the following projects:
• $4.66 million to Gough Inc., of Merrillville, for site utilities and paving for phase three of construction at Lake Central High School.
• $4.81 million to Reichelt Plumbing Inc. of Schererville, for plumbing for phase three at the high school.
• $637,380 to FieldTurf USA Inc., of Montreal, Canada, for synthetic turf and drainage for the Lake Central High School football field.
Ledyard said construction webcams for the two projects are available at www.lakecentral.workzonecam.com/lchs and www.lakecentral.workzonecam/protsman.
