ST. JOHN | Kindergarten enrollment for the 2013-14 school year will be held at all six Lake Central School Corp. elementary schools from 9 to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. March 13 and 14.
Not registering children during this early enrollment period could change which school they will attend next fall, said Mark Kellogg, director of primary instruction.
The late enrollment of 150 students last August caused large class sizes that upset parents, he said.
“If we see that kindergarten enrollment is getting large, we may force later enrollees to attend a different school at a site we select,” he said.
“We encourage everyone to get the information out about this enrollment period to families who have a 5-year old and live in the Lake Central School Corp. boundaries,” Kellogg said.
Bringing the child to registration is mandatory because prospective kindergartens will receive screenings for such things as vision and hearing. They also will spend a brief time with a kindergarten teacher.
“That time with the teacher will help us understand the child when he or she arrives in class,” Kellogg said.
If parents work during the registration days and times, a relative may bring the child for enrollment, he said.
Some of the forms will be provided for parents to complete by March 22. According to state regulations, children must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1 for regular kindergarten enrollment, Kellogg said.
However, families can apply for early kindergarten enrollment if children turn 5 years old between Aug. 2 and 31, he said.
“Those families should attend the registration and apply for early enrollment. They will be given additional information for screening of students in April,” he said.
Parents or guardians also need to bring the child’s legal (not hospital) birth certificate; the adults’ valid Indiana driver’s license or state ID with current address; and two proofs of residency such as home ownership papers or rental agreement and one current utility bill verifying the address. In the case of divorce or separation, a copy of the custody papers is also necessary.
Kindergarten enrollment will be at Bibich Elementary School, 14600 W. 81st, Dyer; Peifer Elementary School, 1824 Cline Ave., Schererville; Homan Elementary School, 210 E. Joliet St., Schererville; Protsman Elementary School, 1121 Harrison Ave., Dyer; Kolling Elementary School, 8801 U.S. 41, St. John; and Watson Elementary School, 333 W. 77th Ave., Schererville.
