ST. JOHN | Lake Central High School athletics took center stage at Monday’s School Board meeting.
Three members of the Lake Central High School boys and girls track teams received accolades for their performances at the IHSSA Boys and Girls State Track Tournament on May 31 in Bloomington, Ind.
Lake Central Athletic Director Tony Bartolomo received the certificates of recognition for incoming senior Gelen Robinson and 2013 graduates Katelyn Moricz and Katie Brown.
Robinson took second place in both the shot put and the discus throw at the state meet.
Moricz and Brown both placed in the state pole vault event. Moricz was fourth in the state, while Brown took sixth place.
Having two girls place in the same event “doesn’t happen very often,” Bartolomo said.
Moricz will attend Vincennes University and participate in pole vaulting. Brown is enrolled at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.
Lake Central Athletic Booster Club President Sherrie Bereda also presented a $26,150 donation check to Bartolomo during the meeting. The donation will help support the activities of more than 600 student-athletes at the high school.
Despite some setbacks in fundraising this year, the donation was possible because of “tremendous support from the administration and parents," Bereda said.
School Board President George Baranowski thanked the Booster Club.
“Any money we get is sorely needed,” he said.
In addition, the Athletic Booster Club previously awarded four $1,500 college scholarships to graduating seniors: Christopher Albright, Peter Boyd, Keller Phelan and Kathryn Toth.
