ST. JOHN | The Town Council is tweaking a draft of a cooperative agreement that will create the student resource officer position at Lake Central High School for the 2013-2014 school year.
The officer will be a St. John police veteran who is assigned to the high school. Among the school resource officer's duties will be mentoring and counseling students and working with Lake Central High’s staff.
The Town Council accepted a federal COPS grant for $125,000 in late December to pay the first 18 months of salary for the officer.
After Town Attorney David Austgen makes the changes, the document will be forwarded to the town councils of Dyer and Schererville and to the Lake Central School Board for their approval.
Under the interlocal agreement, the towns and the School Board would contribute additional funding for the position.
In other business, the St. John council agreed recently to annex the Rosebud Antique store property along U.S. 41.
The site in the 8100 block of Wicker Avenue has to be annexed into municipal limits to connect with the town’s sewer system.
The Plan Commission heard information about the property last month and recommended the council approve the annexation.
The council also approved buying a 2011 truck with an aerial bucket from Altec Trucking in Indianapolis for $79,000. The truck, which has 12,000 miles on it, will be used by the public works staff to change streetlight bulbs.
“It was a demo, so it’s a new used truck,” said Town Manager Steve Kil.
