EAST CHICAGO | Firefighters worked late into Tuesday night battling a blaze that gutted Daisy's Tap.

The fire started about 8 p.m. in the basement of the bar, 531 W. Columbus Drive, and spread to a bathroom on the first floor, said acting Assistant Fire Chief Jesse Becerra. There were no reported injuries, and no one was inside during the time of the fire.

Firefighters went into the building through the back but had to fight the fire from the outside because of the intensity of the smoke, Becerra said. Smoke was seen coming from the roof of the brick building.

The fire didn't spread to any of the surrounding buildings, he said.

The side windows of the bar were boarded up, and Becerra said officials had not reached the owner Tuesday night. He said it appeared someone was doing repairs to the inside of the building.

A portion of Columbus Drive was shut down as six crews from the department worked on extinguishing the fire. The department had a firefighter on the roof of a nearby building to help douse the fire.

The fire's cause remains under investigation.
