FAIR OAKS | An Indianapolis man was seriously injured and three passengers from East Chicago were hospitalized after a one-car crash Friday on Interstate 65 north of the Fair Oaks exit.
Mylan D. Jefferson, 31, of Indianapolis, was southbound in the left lane about 6:05 p.m. when his 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer veered into the grassy median and flipped several times before landing upright in the right lane on the northbound side, Indiana State Police said.
A helicopter transported Jefferson to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill., with what police described as possibly life-threatening injuries.
All the passengers in Jefferson's SUV were taken to Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer.
Courtney Anderson, 21, was a front-seat passenger and received only minor injuries, police said.
Kaylen Walden, 17, was seated behind the driver and also had minor injuries. Both Walden and Anderson were wearing seat belts, police said.
Kimani Harden, 19, was in the back seat and not wearing a seat belt. Harden was ejected from the SUV but did not suffer life-threatening injuries, police said.
The left northbound lane of I-65 was closed for 1.5 hours for rescue and cleanup efforts.
