EAST CHICAGO | This year, the chili goes to the vets.
For four years, East Chicago resident Mario Chapa has been cooking creative chili recipes and hosting a cook-off, with proceeds going to different charities. This year, the event will be held on Veterans Day, and proceeds will benefit local veterans.
The chili cook-off will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Euclid Tap, 3902 Euclid Ave., East Chicago. Chili entries must be brought in a crock pot. Cost is $5 to taste. For more information or to enter a chili recipe, call (219) 290-7654.
Chapa, a medical transporter at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, has arranged for chili cook off proceeds to go to Veterans Life Changing Services in Gary, a Transitional Housing Program of Each One Reach One Child 501(c)(3) Corporation. It is specifically designed to assist Northwest Indiana and Illinois service men and women in their transition back into civilian life.
Last year, the Carmelite Home in East Chicago was the recipient of the chili cook off proceeds.
“I read about Veterans Life Changing Services and felt moved to help support the work they do for our veterans," Chapa said. "This year, Northwest Indiana lost many soldiers and I wanted to show honor, respect and support for the sacrifices they make for our country.”
