EAST CHICAGO | The city of East Chicago was awarded funds under the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

A limited number of applications for HPRP assistance will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon p.m. Tuesday at Riley Park, at 1005 E. Chicago Avenue, East Chicago.

Eligible residents will be able to receive short-term and medium-term aid in the form of rental and utility assistance. The city also will only be helping households that fall under the Homelessness Prevention category of the program (i.e. households that are currently housed but are at risk of losing their housing).

This program is not associated with the East Chicago Housing Authority or Section 8.

Persons interested in receiving an application must bring a valid Driver's License or ID issued by the State of Indiana (ID must show applicant's current East Chicago address).

Anyone who requires a reasonable accommodation to fully utilize the application process is asked to call Nicholas Smith at (219) 397-9974, ext. 21 by Friday.
