HIGHLAND | Modern technology such as the Ipod, Ipad, Iphones, Kindles and X-boxes have become very popular and are being used as teaching tools but books still have many benefits to them.
Borders in Highland, 10135 Indianapolis Blvd., understands that premise and has chosen to encourage their readers to donate books to the East Chicago Public Library, which will be distributed to children in their reading programs.
Harrison Elementary Teacher Andrea Skertich was astounded to find out about the corporate giving program during her recent visit to the Highland Borders. Skertich received the East Chicago Teacher of Excellence Award by the East Chicago Education Foundation last year for her tireless dedication to her Kindergarteners.
"When a child gets a new book they are so encouraged and their faces light up," said Andrea Skertich, East Chicago Harrison Elementary Kindergarten teacher. "We have great kids in East Chicago and we need more companies to endorse academics in our community."
Borders has boxes of books to be donated to East Chicago and will continue their charitable program until August.
