EAST CHICAGO | Contractors working on the old Burger King on Columbus Drive and Main Street ruptured a gas line Monday, officials said.
A contractor was working on the building at 4 p.m., which is being remodeled into a Subway, and was digging when the worker hit a natural gas line, said Herbie Cruz, director of the city's emergency management.
Officials shut down nearby streets and the area around the building was evacuated, Cruz said.
NIPSCO crews shut off the gas at 5:27 p.m., and people were allowed back into the surrounding area, Cruz said. The roads remained temporarily closed Monday to traffic until NIPSCO repaired the gas line.
There were no injuries.
