EAST CHICAGO | The passenger in a van allegedly driving without lights on the city's North Side after dark Thursday was trying to hide a wad of counterfeit cash, police said.
Officers pulled over a blue Dodge Caravan with Illinois license plates in the 4300 block of Northcote Avenue shortly after 7 p.m. for running several stop signs with its headlights off, police said.
The van's passenger, a 19-year-old resident of East Chicago's South Side, was seen throwing what looked like U.S. currency on the van's floor, police said.
But the slips of paper where actually counterfeit money, police said, and U.S. Marshals were notified of the possible forgery.
The driver of the van, a 46-year-old Chicago man, was arrested on a charge of driving without a license, police said. Neither man had been charged as of late Friday.
