EAST CHICAGO | The East Chicago Emergency Management Agency has designated Heritage Hall Community Center, 4506 Tod Ave., as a cooling shelter.
The shelter will be open from 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
The East Chicago Emergency Management Agency advises residents to take necessary precautions during hot weather. Temperatures of 90 to 105 degrees can cause sunstroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
Residents should dress in lightweight clothing, reduce strenuous outdoor activities, drink plenty of water, refrain from alcoholic beverages and never leave children and pets in high-heat exposure places, such as a parked car.
