EAST CHICAGO | Applications for rent-controlled public housing in the city will be just a phone call away Wednesday.
The East Chicago Housing Authority will begin accepting names for its federal Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program at 9 a.m.
Persons who do not have an application on file with the ECHA should call (219) 397-9974, ext. 31, and speak with a representative.
Callers are asked not to dial any other agency number, or leave messages because they will not be returned.
Applications will be mailed to the first 100 persons who call, after which the waiting list for public housing will be closed.
More than 80 percent of the 808 residential units managed by the ECHA are subsidized through the federal voucher program, and officials said a number of them will become available over the next few months.
Prospective renters are ranked using federal Housing and Urban Development standards of income, family size, military service and related criteria, with rent pegged at 30 percent of a household's income after deductions for utility payments.
Persons with disabilities that could prevent them from calling Wednesday can submit an application request in writing by June 30 to the East Chicago Housing Authority Section 8 Department, P.O. Box 498, East Chicago, IN 46312.
