EAST CHICAGO | The city is launching a website that aims to link potential employees with contractors working on infrastructure projects.
The Workforce Employment Connection website will launch at a city meeting with local contractors at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Field Educational Center, 3551 Block Ave., East Chicago, according to a news release. The meeting will focus on the lakefront development project, demolitions, road construction and other upcoming projects.
The website was created because of a 2005 city ordinance requiring contractors doing city projects to hire 50 percent of their workforce from East Chicago. According to the release, contractors have since had a problem meeting the requirement.
Residents will be able to upload their resumes on the website, which will then be viewed by contractors. The link is on the city's website and will be accessible after Wednesday. Unskilled workers can apply through the Indiana Plan, which is on the city's website homepage.
