EAST CHICAGO | An East Chicago man faces multiple charges after months of domestic violence against his pregnant wife, police said.
Elvin Larmar Buchanan, 31, started turning violent against his wife in May, East Chicago police Sgt. Juan Beltran said.
While intoxicated, Buchanan argued with his wife on several occasions, each ending with severe injury to the woman, police said.
The final battery in January, when the victim was pregnant, was enough for her to reach out to police, Beltran said.
"It was that last incident that broke the camel's back," Beltran said. "She then reported three incidents in the past."
Buchanan faces one count of aggravated battery, a Class B felony. He also faces three counts of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of battery resulting in bodily injury to a pregnant woman, and three counts of domestic battery, all Class C felonies.
He is being held at the Lake County Jail.
Beltran said this case shows why it's important for victims of domestic violence to seek help and press charges.
"They need to be aware of services that are available to them to help them identify the signs of a violent partner," Beltran said. "This in turn would help prevent future incidents of family violence to the victim and/or other members of the family before it results in injury, either physical or psychological, and/or death."
Beltran encourages those who face domestic violence to call the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence hotline at (800) 332-7385.
